How do you even break a 1/2 inch like this???

Something something it’s a breaker bar it’s in the name.

If you did that without a breaker bar, I applaud your strength

Impressive. Especially a 1/2 inch.
Metallurgical weakness is my guess.

Is that a Craftsman? Better hurry up and exchange it before they fold.

Nah. This was a ratchet. I was using a cheater bar though, but Ive never seen one fail like this.

I was using a cheater bar, but Ive never seen one fail in this way before. I have stripped ratchets though...

I found out they are also sold through Lowe’s now. So you can exchange it there.

P oor quality steel with the cheater.
AVE explains it really well. This will give you an answer. Give him a follow

Looks like a craftsman. And even with a cheater bar you should be using a breaker bar for this reason. The inside is hallow for the socket release button.
This is 13 bucks

Looks like a craftsman 1/2 inch, i have broken a couple on fwd axle nuts, good news is you can trade it in for a non broken one where craftsman tools are sold.

Looks like someone needs a 3/4" drive
![]() 11/23/2019 at 12:31 |

Also how i snapped a ½” short extension once. For stuff like that the 3/4" set is a godsend

I did it with a long cheater bar on a breaker bar. Rusty lugs are bad news.

I twisted the square part before and then it sheared. Was using a long cheater bar on a seized bolt.

Good to know, thanks!

Sears sold Craftsman to Stanley B lack and D ecker in 2017. Lowes is honoring the old lifetime warranty.

Now that you mention it, I remember that. I was sad, because neither Stanley nor B&D really make quality tools anymore.

DeWalt is their premium power tool brand these days

If I want overpriced power tools, I'll buy Hilti.

I had to replace a Craftsman ratchet last year ; this was the box of returns at my local Sears:
Apparently that’s about four days worth.

How did y ou know what I was using it on?
![]() 11/23/2019 at 16:07 |

I took it back to Sears and got a new one. While there I saw a breaker bar set (1/4, 3/8, and 1/2) for $22 so I snagged it and used the breaker to get the nut (FWD axle nut) off.

And even if you’re using a breaker bar, those still break sometimes. I think I was trying to undo a motor mount. Hitting the engine bay with that much force hurt like hell.

dang, never seen that happen

Axle nuts are where tools get broken

I broke a 3/8 drive chinese craftsman ratchet a few years back by hand, 1/2" is impressive, though I suspect with any additional pipe over the handle it wouldn’t be too bad, especially if it’s from the same batch as the one I broke...

Yep... that was a Matc o 1/2" trying to take off a Crank Bolt. And its the worst when they break and you haymaker the car. Problem is the car is normally unaffected

My last experience doing axles was in an 01 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Cummins. I had no problem with the acle nuts... it was the ball joints that taught me how to break tools.

Nice its worth it. And comes in handy with axle nuts and crank bolts.
This is when you have to step up to a 3/4" breaker. And that was MATCO
